Why not use lossless compression?
- Still requires compression / decompression overhead in hardware / software
- Only a factor 1.4 to 1.6 reduction in image file size

Networked uncompressed data today because:
- Future campus networks have the bandwidth
- Future PCs / workstations are lower cost and higher performance
(memory, disk, CPU, IO bus)
